There’s no way of saying it using cute and cuddly words: Building a killer social brand requires sweat equity. If you’re cool with putting in the hours, let’s talk about ways to make it happen.

Choose a Topic You (and the Boss) are Passionate About

So you want to be a brand — a social media ‘guru’ — a star. Let’s back up a second.

Don’t worry about being a star, it’s more important to be concerned with sharing kick-ass information where people will find it. But before you do that you’ll need to choose a topic to become a signal for. If you’re passionate about semiconductors or polymers, be a ‘brand ambassador’ for that industry.

Now on to the brass tacks.

You’ll need to be on the social networks businesses and bloggers use, including Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. More important, you should endeavor to discover how to use emerging networks to forward your ‘go-to-guy’ status and help the company achieve higher brand awareness.

If you can explain how using sites like Foursquare will help make your business more noticeable (while you use these networks to brand yourself) then you become an asset. There’s a reason establishments like Zagat’s have partnered with Foursquare — they want to appeal to a larger audience.
