What’s holding you back from gaining more website view?
Poor blog content? Crappy SEO strategy?
The answer may be a lot simpler than you think. When’s the last time you took a hard look at your website design piece by piece and asked, “Is this element completely necessary”?
Add Absolutely Everything That’s Necessary, But Nothing Else
I’ll be the first to admit I can get carried away with adding too much to my own website designs. It’s hard not to want to add lots of custom graphics to your cascading style sheets and custom function files once you’ve spent hours learning all the necessary code.
But that’s not helping anyone but you.
We don’t create websites to make ourselves happy, we build them to attract an audience. The most effective website is the one that influences your target audience to make contact (hint: to make contact in a way that is relevant to that audience). So what should you sacrifice in the pursuit of greater relevance?
The way I determine what to keep and what to ditch has to do with the supply chain management classes I took in college. Our professor taught us words like ‘kaizen’ (continuous improvement) that the Japanese use to describe their belief that simple is beautiful. Let me outline a few ways you can clean and beautify your own website/blog quickly and effectively:
- Stop Wasting Time Adding Code If you’re familiar with HTML, add all the custom design functions to your cascading style sheets (CSS) so you can create blog posts and other content more quickly.
- Create a Center of Focus When someone looks at your website, where is their eye naturally drawn? If you want to direct an audience towards a specific page, product, or benefit — make sure that element is the center of focus.
- De-Clutter Simple. If something isn’t helping your website, it’s hurting it. Get rid of the clutter.
