Vodka Eyeballing – Being Popular Doesn’t Make It a Good Idea

by Social Media Commando on June 3, 2010

Vodka Eyeballing is catching on in the United States and Britain.Vodka Eyeballing = Proof that pop culture may be the first sign of the apocalypse.

Apparently the ‘cool new thing’ among some enterprising youngsters who want to ‘get drunk real fast’ is to take a bottle of vodka, hold it the opening to their open eyeball, and pour the vodka into their eyeball. This is supposed to get you wasted.

Except for the fact it’s complete BS.

Pouring vodka onto your eye not only doesn’t get you intoxicated faster than simply drinking the alcohol, but the process can cause permanent scarring. S-T-U-P-I-D. And yet I can see why people do it. It all comes down to peer pressure and the herd mentality.

Social Media Doesn’t Have To Be Stupid

For every @ShitMyDadSays profile on Twitter and Facebook is a business owner who uses the social web to seek feedback and interaction with customers or friends. And for all the ‘Diet Coke and Mentos’ videos on YouTube are a corresponding number of independent producers who create helpful video tutorials (Full disclosure: I have made Diet Coke and Mentos videos, and yes they got thousands of views).

Now, I actually think the @ShitMyDadSays profile is a genius marketing move — but that doesn’t mean you have to emulate it. Don’t do things because others do. Give your own ideas a shot and you’ll be rewarded in the long run.

Quality doesn’t mean boring, though. Just check out these awesome examples of corporate social media. The classic Blendtec videos are fun and innovative uses of the social web that don’t rely on the lowest common denominator. Which is exactly what vodka eyeballing is.

Alright…I admit, this post has turned into a rant. If you take away only one lesson though, it’s to trust in the value of your own mind and think of ways to share that are genuine. Even if you’re just posting helpful tips on a Facebook page, go with that! Don’t feel like you need to keep up with the pack.

And if I catch any of you Social Media Commandos leaving comments that you’ve tried vodka eyeballing — well — I will lose all faith in humanity.

For those of you who still don’t know what I’m talking about, here is a video example (PLEASE DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME OR ANYWHERE!):
