Foursquare is a social media tool that lets you share your location — plus reviews — with friends in real time.
Foursquare Mayors Make Killer Contacts
If you’re not a member of Foursquare, check out this eHow tutorial.
Foursquare is great at engaging their community by offering both status updates and independent reviews. The more reviews you share, the more online street cred you build.
Lots of people use the social network, but a select few get to become ‘Mayors’ of specific locations by checking in with them more often than anyone else. Here’s three reasons why this rocks — and could help you bump up the number of connections you make on and offline:
- Rank and Roll. Rank and review a location with strategic importance to you. If you’re a graphic designer, this might even include becoming Mayor of Starbucks in a busy part of your city, where lots of potential new clients/connections can meet.
- Friend Request Accepted. Don’t be shy about accepting requests, and try to use new tools like Foursquare like old-school networking. When you meet people who share an interest, hook ‘em up (hey, you’re the Mayor!).
- Serve Your Constituents. Be a good Mayor by sharing helpful information and promoting the fact you are the “go-to resource” for your chosen location. If you can teach me something cool and unexpected about my favorite place, I’ll follow you (and actually listen to your non-foursquare messages and promotions).
One last tip:
Network with Other Mayors. Check in with other Mayors and ask them to join a larger network (you could start a business, website…something that helps you achieve a particular goal using the power of crowdsourcing).
