How Social Media Can Inspire Social Change

BP is responsible for the Oil Spill caused by the Deepwater Horizon Offshore Rig.How do you define social justice?

What if we could use social media to help change the world in a meaningful and positive direction?

I think we can.

Let’s explore 3 ways we can use social media as a tool for reaching out to people who can help. Some of these are free, and none are expensive.

I’m having a hard time just sitting by as the oil spill disaster unfolds, that’s why I’m writing this. If anyone knows Tony Hayward, the CEO of BP, please forward the post along. He needs to understand why his PR gaffes are causing real harm.

Social Media Awareness

People can’t care about something unless they hear about it (multiple times usually). So I’m asking you to help spread awareness using any method you choose. But here’s a few suggestions…

Links

One of my friends popped a link to me for a site called ‘If it was my Home‘ that superimposes an image of the oil disaster around your own home state. It’s shocking. Really — spread the link to your friends and loved ones on Twitter, Facebook and other social networks, and I guarantee they will feel closer to the spill.

Google AdWords

I posted an article a few weeks back about a kid who snagged a job at an advertising firm by bidding on the names of top ad executives. He scored an interview for a total cost of $6.03. There’s no reason we can’t do the same to BP and/or Tony Hayward.

Here’s how it works:

Bid on keywords like ‘BP Oil Spill’, ‘Tony Hayward’, and ‘Gulf Oil Disaster’ in a single campaign and ad group. Next, build out some ads that speak to your goal and include specific keywords. Here’s an example:

Help the Gulf Coast Now
Tony Hayward, Please Read This.
Let Us Help Restore the Gulf.
YourSite.com/Gulf-Oil-Spill

Of course, the landing page for this ad can be whatever you want, but I would aim for a little shock value with a sober message and overall positive message. Be creative. Otherwise, who’s going to be inspired to act?

Mobile Media

This revolution is being televised on traditional TV and the web, too. So stop to think how many of your friends and loved ones own smartphones. How many would be willing to shoot a quick video on their mobile and share it? You could post it on a single site (and use YouTube for free video hosting — thanks social media!).

There’s three simple ideas for using social media to promote social change. I hope you’re inspired.

Let’s hope Tony is too:
