It’s Not Me … It’s YOU

Small Business SearchI had a great discussion with Bob and Brian from Birdseye Design yesterday (Birdseye is a building firm. Bob and Brian run the Architectural part of the business).

They’re two fellow Michigan natives and all around cool people.

We spoke about using social media to promote your business, which is difficult for a lot of architects.

Architects operate in a field that traditionally looks down upon self-promotion. So as our conversation took shape over a couple of Switchback beers at Ri-Ra’s in Burlington, I noticed something very cool about Bob and Brian. They really want to learn about their target audience, potential customers who want to build a new home or business in the future, and are less concerned with prizes, awards, and other ego builders.

Search for Your Audience, Not Your Colleagues

Bob and Brian have the awards to prove their expertise, but they also know that the people who read architectural magazines and digests are … drum roll please … Architects!

Their customers are more likely 45 year old married women, so what are they like? What do they read Online? How do they use social networking sites and what inspires them to make recommendations to friends?

Bob, Brian and I had a long discussion about this and other social networking factors. What I’d like to ask you is: How are you getting inside the head of your potential fans and customers?
