What the Hell Makes a Post Link Worthy?
This is the best SEO blog post ever written.
I know because I’m using every single wicked awesome trick revealed to me by Rand Fishkin of SEOmoz in his article describing link worthy content.
Here’s what you need to get wicked huge inbound links:
Links Require Long Titles and Blah, Blah, Blah
The way to write a post that becomes massively popular is to make sure it contains all of the following…
- Pictures
- Lists
- Videos
- Did I mention pictures and lists?
But that’s not all! You gotta have plenty o’ content too, which means writing lots and lots of words, then occasionally bolding keywords like SEO so the SERP’s understand what your topic is.
Alrighty, time to insert an awesome video from Matt Cutts speaking about chiropractors who can’t get their sites to rank on Google:
This is one very tasty post so far, but we’re only at 161 words, and according to Rand you will have to invest 2,300 in order to kill it on the search engines and rack up some championship link building numbers.
188 words. We’re getting there…
Titles are Important SEO Factors
Titles tell both readers and search engines what it is you’re talking about, so make sure to use plenty of them in your posts to break up the content, make it more readable, and create a map the SERP’s will scan easily.
Here are a few examples:
Improve Search Engine Optimization Performance Now!
This title should include a list of steps that will teach people how to improve their SEO strategy. Make sure the information under every heading is relevant, otherwise you’ll risk alienating the reader, and ultimately it is readers who link to you, not the search engines (well, ok, that’s not totally true, but you get what I’m saying).
Stop Being Cute with Your Writing
Lisa Barone is the person who reminds me of this every day (She blogs over at Outspoken Media). I love reading her posts because she writes just like she speaks, which is to say very straightforward.
Lisa isn’t a fan of pretense or being cutesy with her SEO lessons and it’s very refreshing. Don’t waste time getting to the point in your own writing either, it pays off.

Is it really 11:15pm?
Dammit I’m going to have to write a little faster or else my very understanding wife is going to give me a nasty look when I finally go to bed.
Search Is Not a Family Value
Is Dad STILL on the Computer?
:You will become addicted to learning how to get pages to rank.
:You will require glare resistant glasses to prevent your retinas from melting.
:Your kids will get pissed when they can’t check their Facebook pages.
:Your significant other may consider poisoning your food out of spite.
It’s not an easy task, which is why I recommend you stop reading this post right now and go play catch with your son, read to an old person, then go to bed early and go volunteer at a soup kitchen in the morning.
Lengthy Posts are SEO Imperatives
I really don’t have much interest continuing this post. In fact I’m starting to wonder why in the hell I undertook such an amazing feat so late in the evening.
The short answer is that I do it for the people, for my amazing readers who just can’t make it through the day without some inspiration from the Social Media Commando (ah, shameless plug in my own post, this really IS the best SEO article ever!).
No, we both know that is a lie. I’m writing this out of pure, shameless ego. I love myself enough to appreciate how utterly fantastic I am, and want to rub it in people’s faces.
Never Blog After 10pm
Writing good SEO content is not really possible after a certain hour. My father calls this the ‘law of diminishing returns’, but I think it’s easier just to say you get really freaking tired and have to start making things up.
Which reminds me…
Rand Fishkin is one evil man. I mean really evil. 2,300 words in a single blog post! This is insanity.
Alright, I am not a well-paid Harvard professor, and now I am in some very serious doo doo with the wife, who does not care one iota about the Commando’s goal of writing the perfect blog post focusing on search engine optimization.
It’s now one minute past the time I promised I would come to bed. I don’t dare risk being more than five minutes late or some very bad things may happen.
Enjoy this post. It’s the best out there so, you know, link to it all over the place. That’s what Jesus/Muhammad/Vishnu/[Insert Your Personal Deity Here] would want.

Hi! Just an FYI, that post was actually written by someone from our SEOmoz community, Casey Henry. He put a lot of work into that post, it would be great for him to get the credit. Thanks!
Thanks Jen, good to know — how could I have missed that
