iPhone – I’m Seriously Over Your ‘Shiny Object’ Appeal

HTC EVO 4G from Sprint -- available June 4, 2010 with an 8 megapixel camera and Android OS.iPhone service sucks.

Well, I guess that’s not fair — AT&T service is what sucks, but since the iPhone is inextricably linked to AT&T, what’s the difference?

I just got back from a work trip to Las Vegas where I attended a conference that really got me thinking about the value of my mobile device. I dropped calls and experienced poor voice quality when I tried to reach my wife in between speeches and networking events.

But that’s not all…

My colleagues and I, who all use the iPhone, received text messages hours after they had been sent and found time sensitive emails from the office pushed to our mobiles too late.

This affects my productivity, and for what AT&T is charging, that’s a deal breaker.

iPhone – Meet the HTC EVO

The ‘closed environment’ of Apple’s iPhone App Store also has me a little turned off. That’s why the Android OS deserves a look — and the coolest Droid device coming to market has got to be the HTC EVO. In a perfect world the EVO would run on Verizon, but since my wife isn’t a fan of Verizon overcharging her in the past, maybe it’s a sign?

So…why would a Mac fan get a Droid phone?

Simple: It all comes down to productivity, accessibility, and yes a little bit of gadget obsession.

Even the unofficial Apple blog admitted that Android has pulled ahead of the iPhone OS, partially because of a Verizon 2-for-1 sale of phones, but also because users aren’t happy with limitations like no multitasking (which is to be solved in the newest Apple software release).

I want to create and share information without being limited by a crappy service provider (AT&T) and a closed environment of apps (Apple). But you know what? I also want to be able to make phone calls!

Bottom Line: I eagerly await the release of a software update that makes multitasking possible, but slow data speeds, poor call quality and a closed ecosystem have me seriously considering breaking my contract and leaping to the HTC EVO.

p.s. Check out the EVO in action in the video below, and if you’re considering a new service provider, Mashable posted a helpful wireless plan comparison.
