What is a Business?

Social Media BusinessWhat the heck is a business these days?

I’m just curious what you think, because social networks like Facebook are causing lots of people to act very strangely.

For one thing, everyone seems to have a Fan Page. Does this mean they own a business?

Not to mention the hundreds of ‘real’ brick and mortar business owners who ask me how to use social networks to merchandise products and services.

Let me add another wrinkle — when does a side project become a business?

If I help people secure their social media profiles, does that make me a business owner, a freelancer or maybe just a cool helpful guy?

Who Cares About Labels…Just Do It

Does it really matter if you’re a ‘business’ or running a project? I don’t think so — just get moving. Especially if you do own a brick and mortar shop. You’ll move the needle a hell of a lot further by getting in touch with people who have similar interests and sharing something of value first.

Lots of people are involved in commerce just because they want to help.

I believe that so deeply that I’ve changed JoeMescher.com to reflect it pretty dramatically. Doesn’t matter what you want to label what you need help with or if you call yourself a business, because at the end of the day we’re really just helping one another…right?
