How An ‘Awesome’ Design Can Destroy Your Blog

by Social Media Commando on March 31, 2010

Fancy blog design — is it a good way to draw more visitors to your site, or a distraction that satisfies your ego instead of improving the user experience?

There’s no simple answer.

Truth be told, glossy pictures can work really well for blogs that focus on web design. The problem is when a business or personal blog tries to be something it’s not.

Here’s an example: One of my buddies runs a great, profitable business and is in the process of updating his website. However when he got a look at the first draft it was way too corporate for the way he wants to come across to potential clients and followers.

I give respect to people who have learned how to keep it simple. It’s so damn hard to get over the allure of the ‘shiny object’, but man — a lot of those shiny objects aren’t worth the gun powder to blow ‘em to hell.

Do you ever feel like your blog design is getting in the way of your content?

Blog Design Evolves: Just Get Started

You can always change your blog design, but you can’t replace time.

The most important part of your blog is the concept and content you share with people (ok, there’s more — like great writing and knowing a thing or two about SEO, but you can learn these over time). If you’re on the fence about starting a blog because you’re intimidated about the design, take a look at Robert Scoble’s blog.

Robert uses the Thesis Theme for WordPress (just like me and thousands of others), but he does very little to customize it. His site probably took 5 minutes to set up. Seriously!

If you want to get blogging with the best of seo, a simple design and a killer concept, just do it! Check out the theme I use via the link below, then check out the video I made for you discussing blog design in a bit more detail…
