This Geek Social Media Commando just got an invite to Twitter Lists, and here are my immediate impressions as of 10:55pm:
Twitter Lists Cut Through Clutter
How often do you wish you could browse through your followers by category?
It’s a challenge that’s always bugged me because when my mind lands on a question it stays there until I’ve found a satisfactory answer.
Lists eliminates a lot of counterproductive scrolling and searching by letting you categorize people, businesses, and organizations any way you like. I think our minds are wired this way if you stop to consider it.
Need proof?
Just look at the top ranking blog posts on sites like Mashable and other social media directories — the ‘How To’ lists always skyrocket in popularity. Seems to me people flock to lists because they cut through the emotion and useless information by getting straight to the point.
That’s not the only cool thing about lists though.
Collaboration
Lists are already showing promise in terms of sharing and introducing people to new friends and fans.
For example, if one of my buddies adds me to their ‘Social Media Mavens’ list (shout out to you, Gus), then I’m inclined to scroll their list, follow more Tweeters, and add them to my own list.
Maybe this is a preemptive strike against Google Wave. Maybe it’s just a wicked awesome addition to my favorite microblog. Either way, I think it proves that Twitter is growing up.
